The Compost Project

Composting - making your life a little greener!

One of the effective ways you can help the environment and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills, is through composting! Food Circle therefore aims to create buzz around the many green benefits of composting at home, through The Compost Project. Not only is it a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and food waste, but it also provides you with a beneficial material for your plants as it serves as a natural soil-conditioner and organic fertilizers. There are various ways to compost at home, and through the Compost Project’s book called ‘Eartha’s Compost Soup’ you’ll be familiarised with one of the composting styles called Vermicomposting!

Eartha’s Compost Soup

In our book Eartha’s Compost Soup, you will learn more about vermicomposting at home. The main character in the book is Eartha the Worm, who will guide you through the process of vermicomposting while making it a fun experience. Eartha will help you understand composting from a different perspective and make your life a little greener!

Vermicomposting is probably new to most of you, so simply put it is using worms to decompose your food waste and organic matter, while turning it into a material called humus. Humus is a material that can be used as a natural soil-conditioner and fertilizers for your plants. It is a low maintenance, odorless and clean process that requires very little space, which is why it is a great type of composting that is suitable for people living in cities or if you do not have a garden or a large space for composting! The book explains in simple terms why to compost, what to compost and goes in detail on how you can compost at home.

The book itself is printed on seed paper, a biodegradable eco-paper which you can plant and it will naturally compost! The Compost Project team can therefore proudly say that the project itself follows the sustainability practices that the book aims to shed light on.

Background of the Project

The Compost Project team consists of a few individuals who are super passionate about sustainability and reducing food waste, and we are incredibly excited to share our project with you! If you are wondering about how the project came alive and the process behind it, our Project Coordinator Cody has answered some of the frequently asked questions below!

Why the Compost Project?

I first had the idea after doing some research about food waste in the United States. More than half of the food produced in the USA is wasted; What a troublesome fact. Living in France, composting is a part of many households in Paris, for the city collects food scraps and turns them into compost for farms. I began to think why this was not already a concept in the USA and how much of an impact it could make if you included the entire American population. The problem is - most Americans do not even know what composting means.

How did the Compost Project come alive?

I began to wonder how we could make composting a possibility for everyone. Urban living makes it difficult to partake in having pet worms. However, what if we could design a compost bin that could work in apartment living settings? What if we could convince people that composting is how they could effortlessly do their part to make a difference? I was up for the challenge! I am so glad that Food Circle Amsterdam decided to bring on my project idea to help me realise it and give it its full potential. Although there is still much work to be done, my team and I come closer and closer to making our earth a better place.
